Colonial style

Colonial style
Colonial style in architecture and design comes from colonial times. It was born in North America and other former European colonies such as India and Africa. Colonial architecture is dominated by symmetry and simplicity of forms. Buildings often have a rectangular shape, two-storey roofs and centrally located entrance doors with columns or a portico. Many colonial houses also have large fireplaces and spacious porches. Windows are usually symmetrically arranged, while the panes are divided by mullions. Colonial interiors are formal and elegant. They use wooden elements in dark shades: panelling, wall panels, fine wood furniture and wooden decorations. Colours are usually toned and details refer to European traditions, with a clear influence of British, French, Spanish or Dutch styles. Travel and exploration ornaments such as maps, globes, crates and leather suitcases are popular.
